The Commissioner for Human Rights warns about the reduction of social assistance for Ukrainian refugees in some European states.

Michael O'Flaherty, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, has signaled a trend in some European states to reduce support for Ukrainian refugees.

Following his recent visits, O'Flaherty observed a decrease in social assistance and housing programs, which is pushing refugees to return to Ukraine due to financial pressures. He emphasized that pensioners and individuals without financial resources are facing major difficulties because of these cuts.

The commissioner also mentioned an increase in hostility towards refugees, influenced by the anti-immigration rhetoric of far-right parties.

O'Flaherty stated that although some states provided generous support at the beginning of the Russian invasion, local population grievances have increased.
