Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a one-year extension of the New START treaty, which limits the number of strategic nuclear weapons between Russia and the USA, on the condition that Donald Trump does the same. The treaty expires in February 2026, and negotiations for its renewal have not yet begun. Putin emphasizes that the extension is essential for global nuclear non-proliferation and for maintaining dialogue with Washington, considering that a potential failure of the treaty would leave Russia and the USA without a bilateral nuclear arms control agreement.
