European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has proposed withdrawing a draft law aimed at halving pesticide use in the EU.

The proposal was blocked by MEPs and rejected by the European Parliament. The new version of the text requires 4% of arable land to be continuously in a 'non-productive area' to promote environmental conditions in agriculture. It comes amid growing concern about the impact of intensive farming on biodiversity.
