In a symbolic ceremony, Pope Leo XIV took the See of Rome in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the oldest Christian basilica in the West. After a ritual visit to the Capitol, he celebrated mass, emphasizing the importance of empathy and anticipating people's needs. The basilica has historical significance as the site where the Lateran Treaty was signed in 1929. The Pope also visited the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where his predecessor Pope Francis is buried.
