Pope Leo XIV began a seven-day state visit to Spain on Saturday, landing in Madrid, where he was welcomed by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The visit is focused especially on social issues and migration and includes official meetings, visits to social centers, and events dedicated to young people, among which is a large vigil expected to attract around 400,000 participants.
During the flight to Madrid, the Sovereign Pontiff stated that pedophilia in the Catholic Church remains "an open wound" and emphasized that he will continue the fight against this phenomenon. Throughout the visit, the Pope will also visit a shelter for homeless people run by Caritas, and will later travel to Barcelona, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife. Authorities have announced that his movements will temporarily affect traffic in the cities visited.
