Pope Leo XIV announced the appointment of Evelio Menjivar-Ayala as bishop of the Wheeling-Charleston diocese in West Virginia, a few weeks after an exchange of words with President Donald Trump. Menjivar-Ayala, at the age of 56, migrated to the USA from El Salvador in 1990, fleeing poverty and conflict. After being detained in Mexico, he managed to cross the border and was ordained in 2004. Pope Leo recently criticized Trump's threats regarding Iran and the treatment of migrants in the USA, deeming them unacceptable. Trump responded by accusing the pope of weakness in the face of crime. Trump's comments were condemned by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The pope stated that he is not interested in a debate with the American president, emphasizing the importance of calling for peace.
