In an audience at the Vatican, American Pope Leo XIV condemned the malicious use of confidential information against the Catholic Church, urging intelligence agencies to be vigilant and to respect human dignity. He emphasized that the Church is often a victim of intelligence services that act with malicious intent, mentioning the repression suffered by Catholic institutions in various countries, such as Nicaragua.

On the occasion of marking a century since the establishment of the Italian intelligence services, the Pope insisted on the necessity of protecting individual rights and highlighted the importance of setting limits on the use of technology, to ensure respect for fundamental freedoms. He called on intelligence agencies to safeguard the right to privacy, freedom of conscience, and the right to a fair trial.
