Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Algeria, where he called for forgiveness and honored the victims of the War of Independence. Trump's criticisms did not intimidate him.

Pope Leo XIV began on Monday a historic visit to Algeria, the first by a pope to this Muslim country, calling for forgiveness and reconciliation.

Before departing from Rome, the pontiff stated that he does not intend to engage in a controversy with American President Donald Trump, who harshly criticized the Catholic Church.

During the visit, the pope laid a wreath at the Martyrs' Monument, honoring the victims of the War of Independence against France. In an emotional speech, he emphasized the importance of peace and forgiveness, stating that resentments should not be passed down from generation to generation. The pope will also visit the Great Mosque and the Notre-Dame d'Afrique basilica, where he will issue a call for fraternity between Christians and Muslims.

This journey is part of a broader tour in Africa, which will also include other countries such as Cameroon and Angola. Leo XIV highlighted his connection to Saint Augustine, considering this visit an opportunity to promote interreligious dialogue.
