Dominican nun Lucia Caram announced that Pope Francis, who passed away in April 2025, left her a donation in his will to purchase ambulances for his humanitarian missions in Ukraine. In an interview with a television station in Barcelona, Caram confessed that the Pope's gesture was moving and unexpected, considering that he had previous meetings with her in which he promised assistance.
The nun, who leads the Santa Clara Monastery Foundation in Manresa, Spain, has made over 20 trips to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, providing medical assistance and evacuation support. Although Pope Francis condemned the invasion, some of his comments have sparked controversy, including his 2024 call for negotiations with Moscow. In the same interview, Caram also discussed her meeting with the new Pope Leo XIV, describing him as reserved but clear in communication.
