Poland is making progress in assessing the losses caused by the Soviet aggression and the post-war dominance of the USSR, paving the way for possible reparations from Russia. A historical public institution has begun cataloging the damages, and Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski emphasized that the Polish government does not consider the issue of war reparations resolved. This initiative comes after Warsaw requested reparations from Germany for the destruction during World War II, straining Polish-German relations.

The director of the War Losses Institute, Bartosz Gondek, mentioned the difficulties in documenting the losses due to destroyed or inaccessible archives. Poland, which was invaded by the Soviet Union in 1939, maintains that it has not renounced its right to reparations, and this effort could deepen the diplomatic rift with Moscow, already affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Gondek stated that it is time for historical responsibility to be addressed, including by the political heirs of the USSR.
