Eight babies, including a pair of twins, have been born healthy in the UK thanks to an innovative genetic technique developed by Newcastle University. The method involves using DNA from the mother, father and a donor to prevent the transmission of mitochondrial diseases. It was made possible thanks to changes to UK legislation in 2016. Doctors point out that babies do not have three parents, as the inheritance of defining traits is only from two of the parents. This revolutionary technique offers a solution for a rare disease that seriously affects children's health.
