According to a report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the nine nuclear-armed states spent a record amount of 119 billion dollars in 2025, marking a 19% increase compared to the previous year. This represents the highest amount since ICAN began monitoring expenditures in 2020.

The United States allocated 69.2 billion dollars, by far the largest spender, with a 22% increase compared to 2024, in the context of rising geopolitical tensions. China ranks second with 13.5 billion USD, while the United Kingdom surpassed Russia, spending 12.6 billion USD, as Russia increased its spending by 6%, reaching 9.5 billion USD.

A report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute highlights the growing importance of nuclear weapons as instruments of power, warning of the risks of escalating conflicts.

ICAN has called on the international community to take decisive action for nuclear disarmament.
