The Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Stoere, urged China to use its relations with the Russian leadership to help find a negotiated solution to the war in Ukraine, during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Oslo.
Stoere emphasized that China has direct access to the Russian leadership and expressed hope that it will use this channel. The discussions focused on the conflict in Ukraine, and Stoere mentioned that, although there is potential for cooperation between Europe and China, the current war limits these opportunities.
Norwegian Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, described the dialogue with China as constructive but avoided providing details about possible contributions from China to the negotiations. Norwegian officials suggested that negotiations should start without conditions, with a ceasefire based on the current front line, considering this a significant concession from Ukraine.
Wang Yi visited Norway as part of a tour in the Nordic countries, including Denmark, Sweden, and Finland.
