The escape occurred on the night of July 30-31, when a man crossed the sea border clinging to Styrofoam near Ganghwa Island. The South Korean military identified him and rescued him after he signaled for help. The operation took about ten hours and the defector confirmed his intention to defect to South Korea. Direct escapes are rare, with most North Korean refugees reaching South Korea via China and other countries.
