A few weeks after the opening of the Wonsan-Kalma resort, North Korea suspended access to foreign tourists, including from Russia, citing unspecified reasons. Although the resort can accommodate 20,000 people and has been promoted by Kim Jong-un, analysts suggest the government may be worried about possible backlash. The ban could severely affect the North Korean economy, which depends on tourism revenue, as tourists from China, who made up the majority of visitors before the pandemic, have yet to return.
