Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France, will begin serving a five-year prison sentence on October 21, after being convicted of the illegal financing of his 2007 presidential campaign. During a hearing, the head of the National Financial Prosecutor's Office announced that Sarkozy will be placed in pre-trial detention at the Santé prison in Paris. He is the first European leader to serve a prison sentence, although he remains presumed innocent pending his appeal. The prison has been recently renovated, providing better conditions for inmates.
