The Nicaraguan government, led by President Daniel Ortega, announced the release of dozens of prisoners from the national penitentiary system, a day after the United States requested the release of over 60 political prisoners from the country. This measure comes in response to the pressure exerted on leftist governments in Latin America, especially after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by American special forces. Although the Nicaraguan government has not confirmed the exact number of people released or the reasons for their arrest, a human rights organization identified 19 released individuals, including opposition leaders. The U.S. Embassy welcomed the release and called for continued actions for the freedom of those who remain in detention. The opposition coalition Liberales Nicaragua emphasized that the decision to release is the result of political pressure from the U.S.
