The British health security agency has announced the identification of a new suspected case of hantavirus in a British citizen on the island of Tristan da Cunha, in the South Atlantic, where passengers of the cruise ship MV Hondius disembarked last month.
Two British citizens have been confirmed so far with hantavirus, one being transported to South Africa for medical care, and the other to the Netherlands. Two other British citizens have returned to the UK and are in home isolation.
The island of Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world, has about 220 British citizens. A Dutch woman who came into contact with a fatal case of hantavirus has tested negative. British authorities will provide support to citizens disembarking from the ship, and all passengers will be asked to isolate for 45 days upon returning to the UK.
