The 'Eastern Sentinel' operation is a NATO military project launched in September 2023, aimed at rapidly strengthening the defense posture on the eastern flank, in the context of recent threats, including incursions by Russian drones. Mark Rutte, NATO's Secretary General, emphasized the importance of this initiative, mentioning the rapid progress in addressing drone threats, through the development of proprietary technologies and by sharing lessons learned, especially from Ukraine's experience. Rutte reaffirmed NATO's commitment to the collective defense of Romania, highlighting the importance of the presence of allied troops and the increased attention given to the Black Sea region. The NATO foreign ministers' meeting will address support for Ukraine and the strengthening of the Alliance's deterrence and defense capabilities.
