Mustafa Suleyman, the director of Microsoft's artificial intelligence division, stated that only biological beings can have consciousness, emphasizing that research to demonstrate otherwise should be halted. In an interview with CNBC, he explained that although AI models can imitate human behaviors, they cannot feel real emotions or pain.
Suleyman invoked the 'biological naturalism' theory of philosopher John Searle, which argues that consciousness is only possible through the processes of a living brain. He also mentioned that Microsoft will not develop erotic chatbots, contrary to other companies in the field, stating that there are areas where the company will not venture. Suleyman, who joined Microsoft in 2024, emphasized the importance of developing AI models for humans, not as individuals, and highlighted the need for healthy skepticism regarding the rapid advancement of technology.
