Catholic archbishop and the Vatican's 'foreign minister', Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, made a visit to Moscow on Tuesday, where he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Gallagher delivered a clear message: the conflict in Ukraine must end quickly, emphasizing that military solutions are not viable. This is his first visit to Russia since 2021, and his message was supported by Pope Leo XIV, who called for an end to hostilities and the initiation of negotiations.

Although the divergences between the two parties were acknowledged, the atmosphere of the meeting was positive, with an emphasis on keeping communication channels open. Gallagher discussed the protection of civilians and humanitarian cooperation, including the return of Ukrainian children and family reunification. His visit coincided with the arrival of CIA Director John Ratcliffe in Moscow, suggesting an intensification of international efforts for peace. Gallagher reiterated that the Vatican is willing to provide a platform for dialogue to facilitate a sustainable solution.
