Meningitis epidemic in Great Britain: Two young people have died, several serious cases

In the Canterbury region, southeast England, an outbreak of meningitis has led to the death of two people, including a student from the University of Kent.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported 13 cases of meningitis and septicemia between Friday and Sunday, with 11 people hospitalized in serious condition, most of whom are between 18 and 21 years old. UKHSA and NHS are providing antibiotics to students in the area as a preventive measure. UKHSA Deputy Director Trish Mannes assured that individuals who had close contact with confirmed cases received preventive treatment. The exact strain of the bacteria has not yet been identified.

Meningococcal infections are extremely dangerous and can lead to severe complications or rapid death. The number of cases has increased in recent months, in the context of the relaxation of post-pandemic health restrictions.
