The fifth round of arrests in Turkey targets 47 people, including mayors and officials in Istanbul, amid an ongoing crackdown on political opposition. The arrests began in March with the jailing of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, considered a rival of President Erdogan. The government denies accusations of political interference and upholds the independence of the judiciary, while Imamoglu, while in prison, denounced the orders as unjust and illegal. Nearly 110 people have previously been detained on similar charges.
