Canada's Prime Minister, Mark Carney, departed for China on Tuesday, marking the first visit of a Canadian prime minister to Beijing since 2017. This visit takes place in a context of uncertainty in relations with the USA, affected by a trade war and threats from President Trump. Carney accepted the invitation to visit China after a meeting with President Xi Jinping, and experts expect the signing of memorandums of understanding. Discussions will focus on Canadian crude oil exports and issues related to canola, affected by tariffs imposed by China.

There are also concerns regarding cooperation in the field of national security and human rights, and Canada has expressed concerns about human rights violations in China. In this context, Carney will need to navigate between trade opportunities and political risks, considering possible reactions from the USA.
