Mamdani became the first Muslim and South Asian elected to lead New York City, achieving a significant victory despite attacks against him. During the election, anti-Mamdani accounts on platform X spread a false statement attributed to the Islamic State, suggesting an attack in NYC. Conservative influencers, such as Laura Loomer, linked this statement to Mamdani, insinuating that Muslims would celebrate his victory through violence. Researchers confirmed that the statement was fabricated, having characteristics inconsistent with the usual style of the Islamic State. Mamdani, a supporter of the Palestinian cause, was the target of disinformation and racist rhetoric, but continued to oppose anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. At 34 years old, he promised to address the city's economic issues, thus attracting voters.
