The authorities in Madrid have announced that they will impose countermeasures that will affect travelers from Italy if the Italian government does not suspend the temporary border control measures by Sunday, August 9.

Italy introduced these controls in response to the wave of migrants that has entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, located on the Moroccan coast. The Spanish government believes that the Italian measures are "unfair, contrary to the interests of the European Union, and discriminatory against the population of Spain," emphasizing that there have been no secondary movements of migrants from Ceuta within the European Union.

If Italy does not abandon the controls, Madrid will take "proportional" measures to protect the interests of Spanish citizens.

Italy has suspended the Schengen agreement for air and sea connections with Spain, requiring travelers to present identification documents. So far, no major incidents have been reported, only disruptions at departure due to document checks.
