In a period marked by uncertainties and international tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron could soon announce the introduction of a voluntary military service aimed at young people aged between 18 and 25. This project, studied for some time, would offer young people the opportunity to learn a trade and gain professional experience. France suspended mandatory military service in 1997, and currently, several European countries are reintroducing national services.
Macron emphasizes the need for a mobilized nation and a strong army, promising measures by autumn. The Ministry of the Armed Forces has not provided specific details, but it is estimated that the service could involve between 10,000 and 50,000 people annually, with a duration of 10 months and compensation lower than the minimum wage. The national strategic plan for 2025 aims to strengthen national cohesion and create a mobilizable group in case of crisis. The idea is supported by various segments of the political class, including right-wing and socialist formations.
