Following negotiations with an envoy of President Trump, Aleksandr Lukashenko released 123 prisoners, including Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski and opposition leader Maria Kalesnikava. In exchange for this gesture, the largest since the discussions began, the United States agreed to lift sanctions on Belarus's strategic potash industry.
While welcoming the humanitarian success, the opposition in exile is calling for the maintenance of EU sanctions to force a systemic change. According to the Viasna group, approximately 1,227 political prisoners remain in Belarusian prisons, whose existence continues to be denied by the regime in Minsk.
