Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics has called for the construction of fences on the border with Russia and Belarus to be speeded up, citing risks from the war in Ukraine.

Rinkevics visited the border with Russia and Belarus, stressing the need for adequate preparation for possible security scenarios. He discussed plans to build fences, concrete barriers and anti-tank obstacles, noting that Latvia will invest €300 million between 2024 and 2028 to strengthen the 400-kilometer border. The President emphasized the importance of continued security and cooperation with NATO to deter Russian aggression.
