Larry Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary and president of Harvard University, announced that he will retire from teaching at the end of the academic year, following the controversies generated by his correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein. The decision was influenced by the recent publication of documents by the U.S. Congress, which detail his interactions with Epstein, although there is no evidence of illegal acts committed by Summers. In November, he suspended his teaching activities and temporarily stepped down from his position as director of a business and government program, in the context of an internal review of the university. Harvard's spokesperson confirmed that Summers will remain on leave until his official retirement at the end of the academic year. He also resigned from the board of directors of OpenAI, expressing regret for the situation created and a desire to repair relationships with those close to him.
