Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader and supporter of Vladimir Putin, has tried to limit the recruitment of Chechens for the war in Ukraine, according to a source cited by The Economist.
Although Kadyrov stated that Chechnya has sent over 70,000 soldiers to the front, the data on casualties suggests a discrepancy, with only 540 confirmed deaths among the Chechens.
This difference could be explained by the recruitment of volunteers from other regions of Russia into units associated with Chechnya, such as the special forces unit Ahmat, where only a quarter of the soldiers are Chechen.
