Iraq announced on Sunday the withdrawal of coalition forces led by the US from all military bases on Iraqi territory, except for the autonomous Kurdistan region in the north. The military committee responsible for concluding the coalition's mission stated that all military objectives will come under the control of Iraqi security forces. This withdrawal is part of an agreement signed between Baghdad and Washington in 2024, which stipulates the conclusion of the mission in Iraq by the end of 2025 and in Kurdistan by September 2026. Currently, only military advisors remain in Iraq. American and allied forces have been deployed in Iraq and Syria since 2014 to combat the Islamic State group, which was defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, but continues to operate through clandestine cells. The military committee emphasized that it will continue coordination with the international coalition for the complete elimination of the Islamic State presence in Syria, providing logistical support from the airbase in Erbil.
