The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, decided on Tuesday to grant clemency and reduce sentences for 2,108 inmates, according to an announcement from the judicial authorities. This measure was taken on the occasion of the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, a tradition that often generates such decisions. However, the list of beneficiaries does not include individuals involved in the recent protests, which were severely suppressed.

Estimates regarding the number of people pursued or convicted as a result of these uprisings range from a few thousand to tens of thousands, according to NGOs. Iranian authorities acknowledge the death of over 3,000 people during the protests, but claim that the majority were members of security forces or civilians killed by 'terrorists'. The NGO Human Rights Activists News Agency reported a much higher number of victims, confirming the deaths of 6,964 protesters.
