The recent detention of the mayors of Adana, Antalya and Adiyaman is part of a wide-ranging investigation into allegations of organized crime and extortion, which has led to the arrest of dozens of CHP members. Mansur Yavas, the mayor of Ankara, denounced the actions as politically motivated, underlining the growing pressure on the opposition. In the past, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was jailed on corruption charges, sparking massive protests. Yavas said that in this climate, trust in the judiciary is being eroded.
