The elected Prime Minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar, stated on Monday that his country must arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he enters Hungarian territory, having an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Although Hungary previously refused to arrest Netanyahu in April 2025 when he visited Budapest, Magyar announced that he would suspend Hungary's withdrawal process from the ICC, which is set to be completed on June 2.
He emphasized that, as a member of the ICC, Hungary has the obligation to detain individuals sought by the court. In contrast, other countries, such as France and Germany, have expressed reservations about the arrest of Netanyahu, citing international agreements and diplomatic immunity. This complicated situation highlights the tensions between international obligations and bilateral relations.
