After more than two years of tensions, the Palestinian municipal elections took place, marking the first time Gaza has participated in elections since 2006. Officials loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas secured the majority of votes, according to statements from electoral officials.
These elections were significant as they included the city of Deir al-Balah in Gaza, a territory less affected by the recent conflict, highlighting that Gaza is an inseparable part of a future Palestinian state.
The Palestinian Authority emphasized that this step is essential for national unity and for strengthening a common Palestinian identity. This victory for Abbas is seen as a signal of the strengthening of his influence against rivals from Hamas, who control Gaza.
