The trial for war crimes against Hashim Thaci, the former president of Kosovo, has entered its final phase, with the presentation of the indictment. The prosecution has requested a 45-year prison sentence for Thaci and three other former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), accused of involvement in a "criminal enterprise" that included murders, torture, and illegal detentions.

The indictment details the abuses committed against hundreds of civilians, including Serbs and Roma, in detention centers in Kosovo and Albania. Until February 17, the parties will present their conclusions, and the defendants will have the opportunity to speak. The special court, based in The Hague, will deliberate for 30 days, with the possibility of extending the deadline.

Thaci, who resigned in 2020 after being indicted, has pleaded not guilty. In Kosovo, he is considered by some to be a hero of the fight for independence, and a demonstration of support is scheduled for February 17, coinciding with Kosovo's National Day.
