Over the weekend, Greece intervened in five separate incidents to rescue more than 500 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, mainly near the islands of Gavdos and Crete. On Sunday, 430 migrants were rescued 25 nautical miles off Gavdos and the Frontex agency intervened to rescue 96 migrants from two boats off Crete. They are mostly from conflict-affected countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Greece has stepped up measures to control the flow of migrants, including deploying frigates near Libya.
