Conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Thursday the proposals to amend the Constitution, emphasizing their necessity for protecting future generations. Mitsotakis highlighted the global risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) on democracy and humanity, stating that it is essential for the constitutional revision to consider the future of children. The proposals include a provision stating that AI will serve the freedom of the individual and the prosperity of society, ensuring that risks are mitigated. Other proposed amendments aim to expand voting by mail, increase the duration of compulsory education, and prohibit retroactive taxation. Mitsotakis emphasized that current challenges, such as the climate crisis and the use of AI, must be integrated into the constitutional framework to protect individual freedom.
The revision process requires votes in two successive legislatures and support from multiple parties. Constitutional experts in Greece argue that AI must be regulated to serve democracy, and the proposed amendments will act as a long-term protective barrier.
