Greece announces measures to reduce mass tourism in popular areas, aiming for a more sustainable tourism model.

This month, the Greek government presented a program aimed at reducing mass tourism in popular destinations, after the Bank of Greece reported nearly 38 million visitors last year.

The Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, emphasized that the goal is to promote more sustainable tourism, with a reduced impact on the environment and infrastructure. Regions will be classified based on the impact of tourism, and popular destinations such as Rhodes, Kos, Santorini, and Mykonos will have strict conditions for construction. New hotels in the affected areas will have a maximum of 100 rooms. Additionally, construction will be prohibited within 25 meters of the sea, except for access routes. The legislation will come into effect at the end of June, and by 2040, the number of tourists could reach 55 million, with tourism revenues estimated at 36 billion euros.
