General Carsten Breuer, the chief of the German armed forces' general staff, has requested the evaluation of all young people for potential military service, emphasizing the necessity of this effort to be prepared in case of emergency. In an interview, he stated that it is essential to know the availability of young people, so that no precious time is wasted in defense situations.
The Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, also supports the national evaluation of young people. The new German law on military service, which will come into effect on January 1, initially provided only for voluntary service, but lawmakers have proposed a lottery for the evaluation of young people, with the possibility of resorting to mandatory enlistment if the number of volunteers is insufficient. Breuer emphasized that the armed forces must have flexible operational options and stressed the importance of a strong reserve to deter potential adversaries.
