The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany does not see the need for an international military campaign to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that his country does not wish to get involved in the war with Iran. In a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Merz stated that a clear response has not been received regarding concerns related to the U.S. strategy in the conflict in Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz, crucial for global oil supply, has been blocked by Iran in reaction to U.S. and Israeli actions. Merz criticized the U.S. decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian oil, considering it a mistake. He also emphasized that Russia shows no signs of willingness to negotiate in the conflict in Ukraine, and that Germany and Norway intend to exert pressure on Moscow.
