The discovery took place at Cologne/Bonn airport, where a package of biscuits was suspected due to a "specific smell". The tarantulas were crammed into plastic containers and appeared to be destined for a person in Sauerland. Some of the animals died, while the live ones were handed over to specialists. A criminal investigation has been opened as the animals have to be declared to customs and import duties apply for parcels from outside the EU.
