On Tuesday, Belgium was paralyzed by a large-scale general strike, which led to the cancellation of the majority of flights at Brussels airports and the suspension of public transport in the capital. Approximately 80,000 people participated in protests, marching between the North Station and the Midi Station, while isolated incidents occurred, including arson, and several dozen people were detained. The strike is part of a wave of demonstrations against government reforms regarding pensions and the labor market, with the leader of the FGTB union emphasizing that the proposals would reduce the income of future retirees and raise the retirement age to 67. The protests are supported by trade union confederations and organizations such as Greenpeace and Oxfam, targeting the governing coalition led by Prime Minister Bart De Wever, which is facing difficulties in finalizing the budget for next year.
