The G7 meeting dedicated to the environment began on Thursday in Paris, but climate change was excluded from the agenda of discussions to avoid a dispute with the United States. France's ecology minister, Monique Barbut, stated that the goal is to maintain G7 unity and focus on less controversial topics. Although the U.S., under Donald Trump's leadership, withdrew from global climate agreements, the other G7 nations, including France, Italy, Canada, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom, are sending their environment ministers to the meeting. Among the topics discussed are ocean conservation, biodiversity funding, and transforming arid areas into desert. Activists criticized the decision to exclude climate change, arguing that it weakens collective action. France is proposing initiatives to increase public and private funding for biodiversity protection, aiming to announce $800 million for national parks in about 20 African countries. A political declaration on desertification and security is also expected, and sessions on water pollution are planned.
