G7 foreign ministers condemn Houthi attacks and call for an end to Iran’s support for the group

Foreign ministers from the member states of the Group of Seven (G7) condemned on Monday in New York the “ongoing and unacceptable” attacks launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels against Saudi Arabia and civilian maritime shipping. The statement was adopted during an informal meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States called on the Houthi rebels to immediately halt military actions, threats and attacks on civilian vessels and to return “in good faith” to the political process.

The ministers also called on Iran to stop arming and supporting the group, arguing that Tehran is violating previous resolutions of the UN Security Council. According to the G7, Iranian support for the Houthis represents a dangerous pattern of escalation, posing risks to international trade and global stability.

The latest escalation comes after a period of relative calm in Yemen, maintained largely since the UN-brokered ceasefire in 2022 between the Iran-aligned rebels and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.
