The French citizen Thao Phoumy, aged 62 and born in Laos, was executed in the city of Guangzhou, China, despite the efforts of the French authorities to obtain a reprieve on humanitarian grounds. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Phoumy's lawyers did not have access to the final court hearing, which constitutes a violation of his rights. France has reaffirmed its opposition to the death penalty under all circumstances and has called for its abolition globally. In its response, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the fight against drug-related crime is a shared responsibility and stated that all cases are handled fairly, protecting the legal rights of the accused. Chinese representatives did not comment on the details of Thao Phoumy's case.
