Jean-Noël Barrot, the French foreign minister, called on Ankara to intensify measures against the phantom fleet used by Russia to export its oil, circumventing Western sanctions. The statement was made in the context of the French navy intercepting a Russian tanker in the Mediterranean Sea.

Barrot emphasized the need to increase pressure on Russia to reduce its oil revenues, mentioning that the phantom fleet poses a threat to security in the Black Sea as well. Although Turkey does not apply sanctions, Barrot called for closer cooperation to combat these activities. Previous interceptions of Russian vessels have raised concerns among Turkish authorities, and international calls to restrict purchases of Russian oil and gas continue to grow.
