Jean-Noel Barrot, the French minister, called on Peter Magyar, the conservative leader of the opposition party Tisza, to lift Hungary's veto on aid to Ukraine, after his party won the legislative elections on Sunday. Barrot stated that this situation represents a setback for Viktor Orban and his international supporters, including Vladimir Putin, who is losing influence in the European Union. He emphasized France's expectations from the new government, including the reconstruction of the rule of law and the lifting of unjustified vetoes.
Orban has had numerous conflicts with the European Commission, being accused of undermining the rule of law and individual freedoms, especially by blocking aid to Ukraine after the Russian invasion in February 2022. Hungary has cultivated close relations with powers that wish to weaken the European Union, continuing to purchase hydrocarbons from Russia and maintaining ties with Russian officials.
