The former high-ranking EU diplomat, Federica Mogherini, and the former head of the diplomatic service, Stefano Sannino, were released by the Belgian police after being detained for questioning in connection with an investigation into possible fraud. They, along with another member of the College of Europe staff, were detained in relation to a public tender awarded by the European External Action Service (EEAS) during the period 2021-2022, which is alleged to have been favored in favor of the College of Europe.
The EU Attorney General stated that the charges include fraud, corruption in public procurement, and conflict of interest, but are not proven, and those detained benefit from the presumption of innocence. The investigation included searches at the College of Europe and the EEAS, supported by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
